I'm right, you know …

West Lothian, West Gwent, West Antrim …

Iain Dale is pretty unimpressed by Ken Clarke’s ideas on the West Lothian question, and I have some sympathy, but I wouldn’t necessarily be so harsh.

The proposals may be timid, but they are at least a tiny step in the right direction, so as far as it goes I wouldn’t object to them. If the plans are “half-baked”, though, then they are no more so than the current situation.

As some point we are going to have to decide whether to do the job properly and have a fully fledged federal system or go back to Whitehall centralisation (which doesn’t seem likely).

The next step, though, should be increasing the size of Scottish (and Welsh/NI) constituencies – after all, with so much now devolved, why shouldn’t they have, say, half the number of MPs?

Increasing the size of Scottish and Welsh constituencies would be monumentally stupid.

Why should the Scots and Welsh have less representation on reserved matters?

Clarke’s plans are less than half-baked, they are completely useless.

I would turn that question around, and ask why do Wales and Scotland need so many representatives just for reserved matters. I’m not arguing for no representation, just for a more efficient size of legislative workforce.

Longer term though, representation between the “nations” could return to equality if we weren’t stuck with the worse than useless halfway house – hence my comments about federalism/centralisation (I’m favouring the former).

That is little englander extremism. What that idea of your would mena is we could go to war and English people have more a right to decide of we go to war then scottish people. No way should our MPs’ be reduced. Why can you lot not just ask for devolution for your regions.
It is not equality England has 10 times the population of all the other nations of the UK. In the USA small states have more power so why do you lot get so upset at that happening here.
